"NYC News Stand"

This is the upgraded NYC newsstand. They used to be selfmade by the vendors. This from the mid-19th century to the 1980's.Although some were professionally made in Brooklyn wood work factories. Back when Brooklyn had light industry.

Indeed back when America itself had any industry at all.

The newsstand is where we used to get comic books,..our .10 cent comics. Btw, that's "Comics", not hippie underground comix's. We went to "Head Shops" for that.

Newsstands are also where we got our first porn.

In my case Playboy. Then later physique 'zines. Which is as close as the mid-1960's came to Queer porn.

Them places is where I saw my first for golly-real naked people thanks to all that assorted light porn. My first views of the world through news'science mags. Also comics of all kinds.

Matter of fact I learned to read by going through "Batman", and "Black Hawk" comics. The cornucopia of candies, and soda pop goes without saying.

Back in the day these things were run by old Jewish guys. When I was a kiddie not a few in my neighborhood were skippered by Holocaust Survivors. Yeah there 'was' a Holocaust ya wanna take me on on that one.

I'm amazed at the ignorance, and downright bigotry by too many these daze. The don't believe in the Holocaust, we never went to the moon, 9/11 was done by the CIA,and Israel,..etc.

Nobody believes anything from anyone.

Well you can believe me 'cause my heart is pure, and I 'never' lie,..much.

Anyway cranky old Jewish guys used to run these little shacks of plenty. Now it's 'really' cranky middle aged Pakistani's, and their long suffering wives that do the deeds.

..they won't carry anything with naked people.

Anyway these pics are slightly blurred because I had to sneak the snaps. If the guy saw me shooting his rig he'd have thrown an empty Snapple bottle at me,...cranky.

On the upside they do carry little bottles of mouthwash, condoms, batteries, and blank dvd's. Which is all you really need in the 21st century.

Stay Tuned.

Brought back memories......

When I was much older than I am today, during school vacations I would have to go with momsy and her best friend every Friday. They went to what passed for a supermarket at the time-today might make a large convenience store...

Anyway, once inside mommy dearest gave me 11 cents (exactly) and told me to go have fun. I would proceed to the check out area where there was a Coke machine, and for 6 cents even could buy myself a frosty Coke in a green glass bottle. That, and a nickel for a Hershey bar would set me up for the afternoon.

Near the produce section was a freestanding rack where the magazines were displayed, and a spinner rack next to it with comic books. The bottom of the rack was raisedf a bit from the floor, just the right height for a smallish ten year old to plop himself down, grab a comic or two from the spinner, and enjoy the antics of Superman, Seargeant Rock of Easy Company, and maybe even Uncle Scrooge while the maternal unit carefully selected the week's provender.

Once checked out, she would come, collect me, and we would continue on our mission to make the world safe for '50's consumerism.

What wonderful, primitive days! How did we manage to live without Pri9ngles, or balsamic vinegar, mangoes or fancy cheeses?

I remember my Mom giving me !$2.!! Two whole bucks to have a nice Saturday with!

My heavens that's like giving a 8 year old $100. smackers today.

Wow I had a ball, and a half!

My Mommy was sweet that way. She was deliberately giving us happy memories.

This because she knew what was waiting for us down the road.

She was deliberately giving us happy memories.

I've come to realize that is so important. In the end it's all we have.

I'm amazed, I have to admit. Seldom do I come across a blog that's equally educative and engaging, and let me tell you, you've hit the nail on the head. The issue is something that too few folks are speaking intelligently about. Now i'm very happy that I came across this in my search for something concerning this.
